Under his excellency Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Environment in the state of Kuwait, The Gulf Conference on Environment and Sustainability was held during the period from 3rd to the 5th of December, 2005 in Crowne Plaza Hotel under the sponsorship of Wataniya Environmental Services Co. (W.E.S.) in cooperation with Regional Organization for the Protection of Marine Environment (ROPME).
The Conference participants consisted of 275 researchers and 98 scientific papers were presented in which all disciplines of environment were covered (local, regional and international). The research papers varied from Coastal Zone Management, air pollution, soil, ground water, municipal and industrial treatment for liquid waste and sewage, islands, desertification, mining and impact of development on the environment. The conference also discussed subjects concerning curriculum, education, fish kill, red tide, legislation, environmental laws and enforcements, public awareness and bird flu.

The Gulf Conference on Environment and Sustainability will cover a wide
range of environmental issues that will be presented in scientific
papers by different scientists and experts. The conference focuses on
three important themes: Environment pollution – ongoing and future
potentials; Monitoring, rehabilitation, protection; Role of private
sectors, NGO’s and public in sustainability. The Conference activities
will also include two workshops on Oil Spills Contingency plants and
remote sensing applications; an open round table discussion on:
“Environmental Expenditure… is a long term investment”, and an
exhibition to display most of the environmental products, equipment and
systems
