Conference Recommendations
The Second Gulf Conference on Environment and Sustainability (GCEES 09) was held on 16-19 Feb. 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of
Defense, Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Environment. The Conference was
organized by Wataniya Environmental Services Co. with the support of Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and Regional Organization for the
Protection of Marine Environment (ROPME).
Conference Overview: The 2nd Gulf Conference on Environment & Sustainability
covered a wide range of environmental issues that were presented in scientific papers by scientists and specialists in different fields of environmental sciences. The conference focused on three important themes: Environment Impact Assessment, Risk Assessment and Crisis Management; Monitoring, Protection measures, Rehabilitation and Legislative solutions. The Conference also presented two workshops on surveying and mapping. Also, there was an exhibition to display most of the environmental products, resource programs, innovative technologies, equipment and systems from various organizations.
Objectives:
- Reviewing progressive status regarding environmental issues and concerns.
- Enhancing joint cooperation between the Gulf States.
- Identifying the environmental problems in the Gulf Region & Arab States.
- Exchanging ideas and Knowledge through on going projects& research.
- Reviewing all Gulf & Arab States position on environmental related Conventions & Legislations.
- Enhancing cooperation between governmental institutes & NGO’s. The number of attendants exceeded 250 including scientists and specialists in fields related to environment. The number of scientific presentations were 110 distributed over 10 scientific sessions on the following topics:
Session 1.
- Track 1-1 Environmental Management (in Arabic)
- Track 2-2 Waste and Risk Assessment
- Track 3-3 Environmental Monitoring
Session 2.
- Track 1-4 Environment and Sustainable Development (in Arabic)
- Track 2-5 Marine Ecosystem
- Track 3-6 Arid Environment
Session 3.
Track 1-7 Environmental Management and Educationto better utilization and application of scientific information and increase
interaction for sustainable development strategies.
- Identify the scientific research priorities and analyze short-term and long-term information needs for sustainable development.
- Implement field trips to promote experiential learning to preserve culture & heritage and the environmental and social oncerns of the country.
- Control open dump of Industrial Liquid Waste and Municipal Waste
- Encourage Industrial Reception Facilities to recycle Industrial Waste.
- Stop uncontrolled open pits dump to save the groundwater and air quality.
- Encourage communications between students and sharing environmental knowledge.
- Encourage joint cooperation between NGO’s.
- Support research projects and private sector initiatives.
